Coastal Erosion

We investigated coastal erosion to discover the effect the waves have on the coastline.

We made a model cliff using sand, complete with houses on top and simulated waves for 10 seconds at a time, and watched to see what happened.

10 Seconds
After 10 seconds we noticed that the beach was bigger.

20 seconds
After 20 seconds the beach was bigger again and there was evidence of
undercutting at the bottom of the cliff.

30 seconds

For the next 10 seconds we simulated much bigger waves as if in a storm.
Some of the cliff at the edges collapsed at this point.

The class wanted to find out how long it would take before the cliff eroded so much that the houses fell.  We simulated more storm force waves and the houses fell after 22 seconds.

  1. The moral of the story is, don't build your house to close to a cliff or it might get washed away. A very good experiment to prove this. Well done p4! Caroline (Laura's mum)
