Sue Whitworth and Lindsay Walton from the RSPB came into P4 to give us a talk on common garden birds found in Orkney and what they like to feed on. It was very interesting and we learned a lot.
We showed great respect for our visitors and listened and communicated so well!
After our talk we got a chance to be active. We had great fun making some apple feeders. First we made holes in the apple skin with a pencil.
Then we pushed seeds into the holes
A perfect example from Laura and Alia! Well done girls!
Then we threaded them with string, ready for hanging! We hope the birds have as much fun eating them as we had making them!
Mrs Whitworth then showed us how to make a different feeder.
We put some lard into a bowl and added a handful of flour, oats, seeds and sultanas.
We then mixed it up with our hands to warm the lard and make sure the ingredients were all the way through.
Next we threaded plastic cups or yoghurt pots with string and we packed the mixture into them.
We put the apples out at breaktime on the trees around the school.
Mrs Scott put the lard mixtures in the pots in the fridge to set overnight. Once they have set we can cut off the pots and these feeders will be ready for hanging too. We will hang out only one or two at a time and keep the rest in a cool place until they are needed.
Many thanks to our RSPB visitors - we had a great time!
